Introduction

Langholm Academy is located just off the A7 Carlisle to Edinburgh road, in the Annandale and Eskdale district of Dumfries and Galloway. Its extensive catchment area stretches to the English border to the south and north to the boundary with Borders Council about twelve miles to the north. It extends to again reach the boundary with Borders Region to the East and some five miles towards Lockerbie in the west.

The Academy is a six year comprehensive school with approximately half of its pupils coming from the town of Langholm itself, the others being bussed.

The school serves its four associated primary schools, while a number of placement requests are received each session from families outwith the catchment area.

The Academy was built in 1962 and was a four year school until 1996. A Sports and Leisure Complex was opened adjacent to the school in 2002 and the main building was re-roofed in 2004.

Education Statement

Background Information

Langholm Academy provides a wide-ranging curriculum for pupils at all stages of their education. The school has recently entered into partnership with Dumfries and Galloway College to widen curricular choice in the Middle and Senior Schools. The Barony College, in conjunction with Buccleuch Estates, has also made available for pupils a new course in Managing Environmental Resources.

There has been recent extensive investment in new technologies. There is a whole-school network of PCs and all pupils have access to e-mail and Internet facilities. All classrooms have at least one network PC and there are two full suites of networked PCs in addition to other facilities. Most classrooms now have a Smartboard to assist in the delivery of lessons.

There is a wide range of extra curricular opportunities for pupils including rugby, football, basketball and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The school is eager to participate in community events and link with local organisations. Pupils have worked recently with 'Bonnie Langholm' in improving the local environment and in a charity 'Umbrella Walk' organised through the Rotary Club of Langholm.
