Aims and Objectives

In line with the school aims the Mathematics Department reiterates, that the learning and development of a pupil is a partnership between parents, teachers and pupils.

Aims

  1. To develop, maintain and stimulate pupils curiosity, interest and enjoyment in mathematics.
  2. To develop pupils familiarity with appropriate mathematical concepts, principles, methods and vocabulary.
  3. To develop pupils understanding of mathematics in its widest context and to see how it relates to themselves outside school.
  4. To encourage pupils to develop personal qualities such as politeness, perseverance, initiative, empathy, self-confidence and independence.
  5. To enable all pupils to have equal access to mathematics and to experience success in their work.
  6. To allow pupils to develop transferable skills and informed opinions about their mathematics and to be able to support them by reasonable arguments.

Objectives

To meet these requirements courses should be designed so that pupils will achieve the following specific objectives:

S1/2
Almost all pupils should have advanced by at least one level (A, B, C, D, E, F as defined in National Guidelines For Mathematics 5 -14) over the two-year course.

S3/S4
Almost all pupils commencing at F should obtain Intermediate 2 grade A/B pass at the end of S3.
Almost all pupils commencing at Level E should obtain Intermediate 2 pass at the end of S4
Almost all pupils commencing at Level D should obtain Intermediate 1 pass at the end of S4
Almost all pupils commencing at Level C should obtain Access 3 award at the end of S4.

S5
Almost all pupils commencing Higher in S4 should obtain Higher pass at the end of S5.
Almost all pupils commencing Higher in S5 (having achieved an Intermediate 2 A/B) should obtain Higher pass at the end of S6.
Almost all pupils commencing Intermediate 2 in S5 (having achieved an Intermediate 1 A/B) should obtain an Intermediate 2 pass at the end of S6.

S6
All pupils commencing Advanced Higher with Higher Grade A should achieve a pass at C grade or above.
