Any help you may be able to give your children with their spelling will be greatly appreciated. Underlying everything which fol- lows, and as you will know, is the fact that praise is great motivation. There are many ways to learn the correct spellings of words, but one established method relies on the Look, Cover, Write and Check sequence. This approach uses a number of senses to link the sound, the look and the feeling of writing each word. Pupils will need a piece of paper for this, or a page of their normal English jotter - it would probably be best not to use the spell- ing dictionary. The Sequence After writing the correct version of the words to be learned for the next test (which you could dictate from the Spelling Dictionary if you wish) your son or daughter should: Look at the word, noting any difficult or unusual letter combinations, and say it aloud. It can help if pupils then try to visualise the word with eyes closed. Cover the word. Say it aloud again. Write the word, saying it out loud at the same time. Check that the word is correct. If it isn't, ask the youngster to find the mistake by comparing this attempt with the correct version. In some cases parents may have to help here, eg by saying "There's a letter missing from that word - can you find it?" Copy the correct spelling above or near to the wrong one, paying attention to where the mistake was made. It is very important that the correct ver- sion of the whole word should be written out again , rather than changes being made to the original attempt. Research has shown that if this process is repeated the next day with the same set of words pupils remember the spelling more effectively, especially if at some point the youngsters are asked to spell the words you have worked on together from memory - this is the true test! You may have your own successful routine for spelling homework established in conjunc- tion with your son or daughter's Primary School, and there are many well known word games and puzzles which can really help improve spelling.
